A Description of the Day:
We will begin our day with a visit to Mohair du Maine (La Bazouge de Chémeré).
Mohair du Maine is a breeder and producer of mohair wool from Angora goats. We will explore the farm learning about the process of raising goats, making wool, and meeting some of the farms inhabitants, including some new little kids.
The Angora goat is a very ancient breed with origins dating back to 2000 BC in Tibet. Reintroduced to France in the 1980s by a handful of passionate breeders, the breed is gradually finding its place in our landscapes. Raised with passion and deep respect, the goats at Mohair du Maine provide an exceptional mohair, perfect for all those knitting projects for Christmas.
After our visit to the farm we will have lunch at La Taverne des Grottes Restaurant (Thorigné-en-Charnie) where we will feast on traditional and refined cuisine in a bucolic setting. With the date being the weekend of the ‘Journées du Patrimoine’ a special menu will be offered. See menu selections below.
(Optional) After lunch, we will be just a few steps away from the canyon and caves of Saulges (Thorigné-en-Charnie). There we will be able to gain free entrance to the museum as well as other free activities centred on prehistoric skills, including a ‘prehistoric camp’ (demonstrations of fire-making, painting, music, etc.). Also, visits to the caves will be offered at a reduced price (11 € for both caves). Please note that tickets for the caves will need to be purchased separately at your own expense. Please ask Susan for more details if you are interested.
