A Description of the Day:
In the morning, we shall discover ASNIERES-Sur-VEGRE, a true medieval gem of the Sarthe where every street by the river »Vègre » tells a story of the past. First we shall visit the »Manoir de la Cour » which dates back to 13th Century and shows a permanent exhibition over 700 years of the history of the place and more widely over everyday life in the Middle Ages.
Afterwards we shall visit »St Hilaire Church », a true hidden gem which dates back to the 10th-11th centuries and features outstanding medieval wall paintings rediscovered lately in the middle of 20th Century and carefully restored.
If we’d like to continue our stroll through the village, another must-see attraction is the old humpback bridge over the Vègre River.
Finally, we’ll head to SOLESMES, where we’ll be welcomed at the restaurant “Le Boeuf Fermier” for a well-deserved lunch.
In the afternoon:
For those who are interested, we will enjoy a free visit to part of the Abbey of Solesmes (specifically, the Church of St. Peter in Solesmes, where we suggest meeting at 3:00 p.m.). During the visit, we’ll be able to stop by the gift shop, where you’ll find a model of the abbey and a video showcasing moments from the monks’ daily lives, and step inside the abbey church to admire the sculptural group known as ‘The Saints of Solesmes.’
